Why organic cotton?

reasons why organic cotton is better than normal cotton

Impressively, organic cotton reduces CO2 emissions by up to 46% and consumes 91% less water than its conventional counterpart. This matters as cotton uses 69% of the water footprint in the textile industry while only producing 21% of current clothing. Normal cotton cultivation, mainly in drought-prone areas, exacerbates water stress in vulnerable regions, demanding up to 20,000 litres of water for a kilogram and 2,700 litres for a shirt.

Beyond water concerns, the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers in regular cotton poses health risks, with 5.7% of all global pesticides and 16.1% of insecticides applied to just 2.4% of agricultural land for growing cotton. Several chemicals used in manufacturing, including pesticides, like glyphosate, bleach, formaldehyde, VOCs, PFCs, and heavy metals, remain embedded in fabrics, potentially causing health issues. The human cost of pesticide exposure is scary, with around 1,000 daily deaths from poisoning and long-term health implications.

Environmental damage extends to local water sources, tainting community drinking water with toxins. Organic cotton surpasses regular cotton again in durability, softness, and comfort. Its chemical-free nature ensures longevity and strength in fibres, resulting in softer, more durable garments, like your new tote bag!

Organic cotton is a strong fabric which will last longer than regular cotton. This is because organic cotton fibres aren’t damaged by processing with harsh chemicals and the cotton is often picked by hand rather than by machine, making the fibres stronger and more durable. Organic clothes are also made with more care and attention, meaning they will last longer if you maintain your clothes correctly. To make your clothes last longer, follow basic rules like washing on a lower heat, washing less frequently, ironing less, and giving them the love and attention they need.
